    45-year-old Megvii Chief Scientist Sun Jian died early this morning due to ineffective rescue of a sudden illness

    On June 14th, Megvii Technology issued an obituary. Sun Jian, the chief scientist of Megvii and the dean of the Megvii Research Institute, died in the early morning of June 14th, 2022 due to a sudden illness.
    Sun Jian was born in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province in 1977. In addition to his current position in Megvii, he is also the first dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence of Xi'an Jiaotong University. Sun Jian was admitted to Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1993 and completed his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. After graduating from the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics of Xi'an Jiaotong University with a Ph.D. in 2003, Jian Sun has been working at Microsoft Research Asia as a chief researcher. His main research interests are computational photography, face recognition and deep learning-based image understanding. In 2015, the team led by Sun Jian won five championships in the International Image Recognition Competition (ImageNet classification, detection and localization, MS COCO detection and segmentation). In July 2016, Sun Jian officially joined Megvii Technology as chief scientist and head of Megvii Research. Sun Jian is fully responsible for the research and development of Megvii technology. Under his leadership, Megvii Research Institute has developed a number of innovative technologies including ShuffleNet, an efficient convolutional neural network on the mobile terminal, the open source deep learning framework Tianyuan MegEngine, and the AI productivity platform Brain++.
    In 2017, Sun Jian led the Megvii Research Institute, defeated Google, Facebook, Microsoft and other AI giants, and won three championships in the COCO & Places Image Understanding International Competition (COCO object detection, human key points, Places object segmentation).
    Jian Sun's main research interests are computer vision and computational photography, and he holds more than 40 patents. Since 2002, he has published more than 100 academic papers in top academic conferences and journals, with 255,630 citations. And won the Best Paper Award of CVPR Computer Vision Annual Conference twice in 2009 and 2016.
    In January 2019, the School of Artificial Intelligence of Xi'an Jiaotong University was established, and Sun Jian also served as its first dean.
