    A paper from Beijing Tongren Hospital was withdrawn: involving repeated publication, falsified authorship, fabricated data

    Yang Jinkui, Director of the Department of Endocrinology, Beijing Tongren Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University, Director of the Beijing Institute of Diabetes, and Zhou Jianbo, Chief Physician of the Department of Endocrinology, Beijing Tongren Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University, signed as corresponding authors due to suspected duplication of publication, falsification of authorship, and fabrication of data. A research paper was retracted.

    On March 10, the international academic journal "Medicine" (Medicine) issued a retraction statement stating that a paper published in Volume 96, Issue 15 of the journal was suspected of duplicating publication, falsifying authorship, fabricating data and falsifying Withdrawn due to a publication agreement requiring permission from the corresponding author.

    The title of the paper involved is "Subclinical hypothyroidism and the risk of chronic kidney disease in T2D subjects: A case-control and dose -response analysis).

    The paper was published in the academic journal Medicine in April 2017. The corresponding authors are Jian-Bo Zhou and Jin-Kui Yang.

    Among them, Jian-Bo Zhou's signature unit is the Department of Endocrinology, Beijing Tongren Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University. Jin-Kui Yang's signing units are the Department of Endocrinology and the Beijing Key Laboratory of Diabetes Research and Prevention, Beijing Tongren Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University.

    While previous evidence has shown a positive association between subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and cardiovascular disease, the relationship with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is unclear, according to the paper in question. The study recruited 3270 patients with type 2 diabetes and hyperthyroidism and 545 patients with type 2 diabetes and hyperthyroidism, and performed a meta-analysis. Subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) may be an important risk factor for chronic kidney disease in subjects with type 2 diabetes, study finds. A linear trend was shown between elevated serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and chronic kidney disease in subjects with type 2 diabetes.

    But nearly six years after its publication, the aforementioned paper was retracted.

    According to public information, Zhou Jianbo and Yang Jinkui, the corresponding authors of the paper involved, were listed as the same technical team at Beijing Tongren Hospital.

    Zhou Jianbo, Doctor of Medicine, Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Postgraduate Tutor, Deputy Director of Department of Endocrinology, Beijing Tongren Hospital presided over the work; graduated from Capital Medical University in 2010, and has been working in the Department of Endocrinology of the hospital since August of the same year. He has been engaged in the basic and clinical work of endocrine and metabolic diseases for many years, and is committed to the diagnosis and treatment of senile diabetes, thyroid-related ophthalmopathy, refractory hypertension and other diseases; his articles have been published in Metabolism, Aging Research Reviews, Neurosci Biobehav Rev, Diabetes Care; he is the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease Associate Editor, Frontiers in Neuroscience, Frontiers in Endocrinology Invited Associate Editor.

    Yang Jinkui, Chief Physician, Professor, Doctoral Supervisor; Director of Beijing Institute of Diabetes, Director of Department of Endocrinology, Beijing Tongren Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University, Director of Department of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, Capital Medical University; as chief scientist, undertakes national key research and development 1 project, presided over a total of 7 National Natural Science Foundation of China key, international cooperation and surface projects. Published 269 papers, cited 2505 times. Representative papers were published in "Diabetes Care" (IF: 15.3), 4 in "Cell Reports", 1 in "Nature Communications", and 2 in "Diabetes". Among them, in the past 10 years, he has published 54 SCI papers as the first/corresponding author; as the first author, he has won 6 provincial science and technology awards and 2 national new drug certificates.

    It is worth noting that although another paper signed by another author was listed in the retraction statement as a paper suspected of "duplicate publication" of the retracted paper, its listed volume number, page number and title could not be retrieved . The title of the paper is "Relationship between chronic kidney disease and subclinical hypothyroidism in T2DM subjects: a case-control and dose-response analysis" .

    On the 13th, the staff of the Science and Technology Department of Beijing Tongren Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University told The Paper that they were unaware of the above withdrawal.
