Meet the masters of mathematics in Shanghai, the Pujiang Basic Science Development Forum will be held

The Pujiang Basic Science Development Forum will be held in Shanghai.

The well-known mathematician Yau Shing-tong and the 2018 Fields Medal winner Kochel Birkar and other mathematicians will participate in the Pujiang Basic Science Development Forum in Shanghai.

Breakthroughs in basic research will play a central role in the fourth industrial revolution.

The Paper learned from the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission that from July 24th to 26th, nearly 40 top scientists from home and abroad will gather in Shanghai, including many Fields Medal winners and academicians from various countries. They will discuss "the status quo and future of basic science" at the 2023 Pujiang Innovation Forum Conference Season - Pujiang Basic Science Development Forum.

Focusing on Mathematics, Many Fields Medal Winners Attended the Conference

As an ancient subject, mathematics is not only closely related to the development of other basic subjects such as physics, chemistry, and life sciences, but also becomes the cornerstone of new applications and technologies such as artificial intelligence, electronic information, and new materials.

The Pujiang Basic Science Development Forum this time takes mathematics as one of the important points of discussion. Both the government and the academia expect to bring more wisdom to the development of Shanghai's basic science, especially mathematics and related disciplines, through in-depth academic exchanges and collisions of scientific ideas.

The famous mathematician Yau Shing-tong will attend the meeting. The 2018 Fields Medal winner Kocher Birkar and other internationally renowned mathematics experts will also deliver academic speeches at the forum.

Over the years, Shanghai has attached great importance to the frontier layout and advanced planning of basic science. In the "14th Five-Year Plan for Building a Science and Technology Innovation Center with Global Influence in Shanghai", it clearly focuses on brain science and brain-inspired intelligence, quantum technology, transformative materials, life regulation and other strategic fields and international frontier fields, and cultivates international "leaders" in several scientific research fields and "contributors" of core technologies for future industrial transformation. At the same time, focus on the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, materials and interdisciplinary sciences, and continue to strengthen the forward-looking layout.

Promote exchanges and improve the overall level of mathematics research in Shanghai

It is an important goal of the Pujiang Basic Science Development Forum to accelerate the establishment of a highland of mathematics research in Shanghai and to create a good academic environment for full exchanges between researchers in basic mathematics research and related applied researchers.

For a long time, Shanghai has been an important center of mathematics research in China. Mr. Su Buqing used mathematical methods to stake out the hull, Mr. Gu Chaohao finalized calculations for a certain type of product, and Mr. Li Daqian established a mathematical model for well logging. In just over 10 years, the Shanghai Mathematical Center was established in 2012. It has been at the forefront of international research in important research directions such as algebraic geometry, dynamical systems and algebraic topology, and has published more than 300 papers in world-class journals.

In 2018, the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission integrated forces from all parties to establish the Shanghai National Center for Applied Mathematics. The center adheres to the principle of developing cooperation and exchanges, breaking unit boundaries and disciplinary barriers, and promoting the support of mathematics to the industry. The institution includes scientific researchers from various disciplines, including mathematics, physics, medicine, image recognition, aerodynamics, fluid mechanics... They use "mathematics +" to cross borders, use mathematical methods to overcome each "stuck neck" problem, and provide mathematical support for dredging industry bottlenecks.

During the forum, outstanding scientists at home and abroad will conduct multiple interactive exchanges and dialogues with Shanghai scientists, so as to build a platform for international exchange of scientists, which will further promote the openness and cooperation of mathematics research in Shanghai.
