Located within the territory of Shuanghu County in Nagqu City, Tibet, the Purongkangri Ice Field is the thickest glacier on the Tibetan Plateau. Recent developments from the scientific research site report:
Chinese scientists have set a world record by extracting the longest ice core from glaciers in global mid-latitude regions, measuring an impressive 324 meters. This record was previously held by the Guriya Ice Cap in the western Kunlun Mountains of Tibet. Through ice thickness measurements and core sampling, researchers can gain a better understanding of the changes occurring in Purongkangri, the largest ice field in global mid-latitude regions, as well as the environmental changes it has recorded. This will provide a more comprehensive insight into the impact of global warming on glaciers.
